My Take

Shane MacGowan is, to me, the rare artist whose contradictions were the whole point. An English-born Irishman fronting a Celtic punk band, he turned the ache of emigration and the chaos of the pub into genuine poetry. Fairytale of New York alone secures his place, a Christmas song that fights and breaks your heart at once. His ruined voice carried more truth than a thousand pretty ones. That he died just before Christmas 2023 felt almost too poetic. People loved him for his whole messy life, not despite it. A real poet, gone too soon.
