My Take

Shirley Manson is, flat out, one of the coolest frontwomen rock has produced. The flame-haired Scot from Edinburgh fronted Garbage through the alt-rock 90s with tracks like Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains, songs that are dark yet impossibly catchy. The New York Times calling her a Godmother of Rock feels earned. What I admire is that she never traded on cuteness; she stands on attitude and conviction, and she's only gotten more outspoken on social issues with age. A woman who built her whole presence on strength of will rather than packaging is exactly who I want to root for.
