My Take
Toshiaki Imae is one of those ballplayers I have a soft spot for, because he never seemed to need the spotlight to do something memorable. A third baseman out of Kyoto with a quiet, almost workmanlike demeanor, he was the kind of guy who'd go about his business all season and then suddenly catch fire when the games actually mattered. That's the part I love: he built his name as a short-series hitter, the guy you trusted in the big moments more than the gaudy regular-season numbers. At 180cm he could drive the ball with real authority, but what stuck with me was the steadiness, the sense that he wouldn't shrink. And the fact he moved into coaching afterward feels right; some people are just baseball lifers, and he reads like one to me.
