Shunta Gotoh

Shunta Gotoh is the kind of ballplayer whose value never fit neatly on a stat sheet. Born in Shibukawa, Gunma in 1993, he went straight from Maebashi Commercial High School into professional baseball as an outfielder, spending his career with the Orix Buffaloes and later the Chunichi Dragons. What strikes me is where he went next. Rather than settling into a comfortable role at home, he became a batting coach for the CTBC Brothers in Taiwan's CPBL. That is a genuinely unusual move for a recently retired Japanese player. Coaching is hard enough in your own language; doing it across a language and a baseball culture that is related to but distinctly different from Japan's takes a particular kind of confidence and humility at the same time. I find that second chapter more interesting than most of what happens in a playing career. He is teaching hitting to young players who did not watch him play, in a league that will judge him purely on what he can transmit. That is a fair test, and a brave one to volunteer for.
