Soko

Soko fascinates me precisely because she resists tidy categorization. A Bordeaux-born singer and actress, she broke through with the deliciously unsettling I'll Kill Her, a song whose dark humor announced an artist unafraid of discomfort. I admire that she never sanded down her edges for wider appeal. There's a bruised, confessional quality to her work that refuses to flatter the listener. Splitting her energy between music and film could dilute many artists, but with her it reads as restlessness rather than indecision. I'm drawn to performers who build their own strange little worlds, and Soko clearly has.
