My Take

I genuinely enjoy Sonya Tayurskaya's voice. Coming from frozen Irkutsk to a Saint Petersburg arts university, then throwing herself into punk-rave with Little Big, she has a fearlessness I admire. What I value most is that the wild theatrics never feel hollow; underneath sits a distinctly Eastern European blend of melancholy and dark humor that gives her work real spine. Plenty of performers chase shock value, but few make you laugh and feel something at once. To me she is proof that the coldest places can produce the hottest, most unguarded music. I'm rooting for her.
