My Take
Sophie rearranged my idea of what pop could sound like. Those glossy, sugar-rush synthetic textures felt alien at first, but the more I listened the clearer it became that she was simply hearing the future before the rest of us. Without her, the hyperpop wave of the 2010s doesn't exist in the same form. Losing her at 34 in 2021 was a genuine cultural wound. Knowing she fell while trying to get a better view of the moon feels painfully fitting for an artist who spent her whole life reaching toward beautiful, impossible things. The work still glows.
