My Take

Stephane Robert is a personal favorite of the underdog kind. Reaching a career-high ranking of world No. 50 at thirty-six, an age when most players are long retired, is not talent so much as sheer refusal to quit. I will always take a late-blooming grinder over a precocious prodigy, and Robert is the grinder's grinder, grinding out a tour career on persistence and a big 185 cm frame. That he now coaches makes perfect sense to me, passing on hard-won experience he had to earn the slow way. He is quiet, but his story has real heat, and I am firmly in his corner.
