Steve McQueen is one of those rare artists who crossed over from the gallery world into cinema and made both camps sit up and pay attention — and honestly, he didn't soften his approach for either. Starting out as a Turner Prize-winning video artist, he brought that unblinking visual intelligence straight into features, and the results have been devastating in the best way. Hunger, 12 Years a Slave, Shame — these aren't easy watches, but they're the kind of films that stick in your chest long after the credits roll. Winning the Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years a Slave in 2014 felt genuinely earned, not a consolation prize. The Small Axe anthology showed he's just as comfortable telling intimate, community-rooted stories as he is making gut-punch prestige drama. Sir Steve McQueen is the real deal.

Known for directing films that deal with intense subject matter, he has received several awards including an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe Award.
