My Take
Chucho Valdes is, to my ears, one of the great living architects of Latin jazz. Born in Cuba in 1941, he has spent over half a century at the piano, and the trophy case backs it up: multiple Grammys, Latin Grammys, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. But what fascinates me most is the lineage. His father Bebo was a pianist, his son Chuchito is a pianist, and the band he founded in 1973, Irakere, became a genre touchstone. That kind of inherited fluency, three generations deep, feels less like talent and more like destiny pouring out of his fingertips. I admire him enormously.

Dionisio Jesús Valdés Rodríguez, better known as Chucho (born October 9, 1941), is a Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger whose career spans over 50 years. An original member of the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, in 1973 he founded the group Irakere, one of Cuba's best-known Latin jazz bands. Both his father, Bebo Valdés, and his son, Chuchito, are pianists as well.
