Susumu Watanabe

There's a certain kind of football man who's more interesting on the touchline than he ever was on the pitch, and Susumu Watanabe reads exactly like that guy to me. Tokyo-born, came up through Komazawa University — a school that takes its football seriously — and at 184cm he would have cut an imposing figure as a player. But honestly, the coaching chapter is where he seems to belong. This is someone who probably thinks about the game quietly, draws up detailed plans, and earns trust slowly but completely. Not the flashiest name in Japanese football, but the kind of coach whose players tend to look back and say he actually taught them something.
