T. G. Sheppard

T. G. Sheppard, born William Neal Browder, is a performer best understood through sheer numbers. Fourteen consecutive number-one country hits between 1980 and 1982, and twenty-two chart-toppers across 1974 to 1986, is a level of sustained dominance that almost no artist matches. What impresses me is not flash but consistency, the discipline of delivering hit after hit through an entire era. That smooth, warm voice became one of the defining sounds of early-eighties country. I have a real soft spot for artists whose greatness can be argued purely in statistics, and Sheppard makes that case effortlessly.
