Mitsuhiro Oikawa

Honestly, Mitsuhiro Oikawa — "Mitchie" to his devoted fans — is one of those rare entertainers who commits so completely to his persona that skepticism just melts away. The sequined costumes, the velvet baritone, the habit of addressing the crowd as "Baby" — on paper it sounds like a parody of a 1990s pop idol, but in practice he pulls it off with a straight face and genuine charisma that is almost unfair. What really gets me is that he has never coasted on the glam: his acting work shows real range, from breezy comedy to quietly menacing roles, and he has kept songwriting central to his identity rather than outsourcing his music to a factory. Winning the Elan d'Or newcomer prize back in 2001 signaled that critics noticed too. Over two decades in, still rocking the Prince aesthetic without a hint of embarrassment — that is not delusion, that is artistic conviction.
