Takahiro Ogata

On paper Takahiro Ogata looks like the responsible one: born 1977 in Miyagi Prefecture, 181 cm, Sendai Ikuei high school, then Chuo University. In practice he is the member of the comedy trio Panther who volunteers to get hurt. He is not the one who wins a scene with a quick line; he is the one who sprints in first, sweats, shouts, and takes the physical hit so the bit lands. His catchphrase gag is, structurally, almost nothing, and it still works, because what comes through is not craft but temperament. Japanese variety television has fewer and fewer performers willing to put their body on the line every week, and the ones who built a career on it are the most exposed when formats change. That he has carved out space on YouTube too strikes me as sensible, and a little touching: the guy who always jumps first also found the next place to jump.
