Takashi Uemoto

Takashi Uemoto was born in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, in August 1990, went to Meiji University, and turned professional as an infielder with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp — the team of his home prefecture, which is a nice piece of symmetry. What follows him around, inevitably, is the family line: his older brother Hiroki was also a professional, playing for the Hanshin Tigers. Two brothers in the same league is a lovely story from the outside and probably an exhausting one from the inside, because the younger one spends years being introduced as somebody's brother before he is introduced as himself. At 170 cm he was never built to solve problems with power. Players like this survive on usefulness — covering multiple positions, going in late, being the name a manager reaches for when the shape of a game changes. It is unglamorous work that almost never makes a highlight package, and the teams that have it tend to notice its absence far more than its presence.
