Takuma Kirishiki

Takuma Kirishiki is not the name that sells jerseys. Born June 20, 1999, in Konosu, Saitama, he pitches for the Hanshin Tigers — and if you follow Japanese baseball only through highlight reels, you may never have registered him at all. That is the nature of the job. A relief pitcher is remembered almost exclusively for the nights he fails; the nights he succeeds simply become a scoreline someone else gets credit for. I find that quietly unfair, and quietly admirable. Someone has to warm up every single evening on the chance the phone rings, knowing the reward for perfection is silence. He was Hanshin's third-round pick in the 2021 draft, and in 2023 he worked mainly as a setup man for a team that won the pennant. Tigers fans already know what that is worth.
