My Take
Tarō Asō is, to me, one of the most unmistakable figures in modern Japanese politics. Born in Iizuka in 1940, he served as Prime Minister, then spent nearly a decade as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, a stamina few politicians can match. His blunt, sometimes polarizing manner guarantees strong reactions, yet I find his sheer presence and longevity hard to dismiss. The Gakushuin background, the diplomatic and business stints, even the well-known love of manga all add texture to a man who refuses to be forgettable. Whatever one thinks of his politics, he is impossible to ignore, and I find that compelling.
