My Take

I have a soft spot for athletes in sports the rest of us would never dare attempt, and luge sits firmly at the top of that list. Tatjana Hüfner, born in 1983 in Neuruppin in the former East German heartland, carries the weight of Germany's deep sledding tradition. There is something quietly heroic about lying flat on a sliver of fiberglass and steering at brutal speeds by feel alone. She competed at the highest level for years, and to me that kind of unglamorous, ice-cold mastery deserves far more admiration than it usually gets. A genuine craftsman of a fearsome discipline.
