Terry Notary

Terry Notary is one of cinema's great invisible performers, and I find that quietly heroic. From San Rafael, California, he built a career giving physical life to creatures we never realize are human underneath, the apes of the Planet of the Apes reboot, the beasts of Avatar, Kong, and the worlds of Tintin and The Hobbit. As actor, stunt coordinator, and movement coach, he treats the body as an instrument with almost martial precision. We tend to credit faces, but Notary reminds me that a character can be born entirely from how something moves. The fact that his name rarely surfaces only deepens my admiration for the work.
