My Take
Tilda Swinton is one of those performers who makes you question what acting even is. She came up through experimental theater and Derek Jarman's avant-garde films before the mainstream caught on, and even after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton in 2008, she never seemed particularly interested in playing the Hollywood game. The androgynous, almost spectral quality she brings to every role — whether she's the White Witch in Narnia, the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, or some quietly sinister hotel manager in a Wes Anderson film — feels genuinely alien in the best possible way. Scottish to her core, Cambridge-educated, and deeply serious about the craft, she's proof that the most fascinating screen presence often belongs to the person least trying to be a star.
