My Take
Timur Bekmambetov strikes me as a genuine inventor among directors. From Atyrau in Kazakhstan, he stunned audiences with Night Watch, stormed Hollywood with Wanted, and kept a straight face through Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. But his real signature is the screenlife format of Unfriended and Searching, essentially inventing a whole new grammar for storytelling and pushing it through commercial cinema. That nerve fascinates me. A 2011 Order of Friendship sits on his shelf, yet he keeps leaping across borders and conventions. He is one of the few filmmakers whose next experiment I genuinely cannot predict.
