My Take

Tobias Forge strikes me as one of rock's great strategists. Out of Östergötland, Sweden, he is the sole constant of the masked band Ghost, cycling through theatrical alter egos like Papa Emeritus and Cardinal Copia until the whole project feels like one man's ongoing opera. The 2016 Grammy confirmed the music, but what really impresses me is that he turned concealment itself into the art. Hiding your face takes a strange kind of confidence, and pairing that with such meticulous songcraft is rare. I admire performers who build a world, not just a setlist, and Forge has built one.
