Tom Papa

Tom Papa is the kind of comedian I trust without checking the punchline first. What strikes me about him is the warmth: he is a writer, producer, and actor, yet his radio work with Fortune Feimster on Sirius XM reveals where his real gift lies, which is making a room exhale. New Jersey produces plenty of sharp voices, but Papa chose kindness over cruelty in his comedy, and that is harder than it looks. I admire performers who can be funny without a victim. He has built a long, steady career on exactly that, and I think it ages beautifully.
