Tony Kanal

Tony Kanal is the kind of musician I admire most: the architect behind the sound rather than the face in front of it. Yes, he was No Doubt's bassist and a core songwriter, but what really earns my respect is the second act, producing and writing for Pink, Weezer and Gwen Stefani's solo material. Being British-born and California-raised, he carries a hybrid sensibility that, to my ear, shows up in that bouncing ska-pop groove. Longevity and craft over flash is a rare combination, and Kanal has quietly built a catalog few performers ever match.
