My Take

Tony Lochhead intrigues me because he chose the harder road. New Zealand is a rugby nation through and through, so committing to football there already takes conviction, and he went further by crossing the Pacific to study and play at UC Santa Barbara. To then earn caps for the national team speaks to real persistence. I have a soft spot for athletes who pursue a path their environment does not naturally reward, and a defender from Tauranga quietly representing his country fits that mold perfectly. He may not be a household name, but the determination behind his journey makes him exactly the kind of player I find easy to root for.
