My Take
Topper Headon is, to me, one of rock's great unsung craftsmen. As the drummer who joined the Clash in 1977, he transformed their sound, bringing a versatility that let the band slide effortlessly between punk, reggae and funk. That range is exactly why their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction feels so earned. I love that his nickname came from resembling a cartoon monkey; it keeps a virtuoso human. In bands built around charismatic frontmen, the player holding the groove from behind rarely gets his due. Headon proved that when the drummer changes, the whole landscape of a song changes too.
