Torai Fushimi

Catcher is the least glamorous job in Japanese baseball and, to me, the most revealing one. Torai Fushimi — born 12 May 1990 in Chitose, Hokkaido, 182 cm, a Tokai University product — has built a career out of work that never makes a highlight reel: managing a pitching staff, absorbing the blame for runs he did not give up, keeping a bad inning from turning into a disaster. His résumé reads like a reference letter. Orix Buffaloes, then the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, and now the Hanshin Tigers. Clubs do not keep acquiring a catcher for his batting line; they acquire him because pitchers trust him. There is a small joke in it too, a man named for the tiger ending up in Tigers stripes. Box scores flatten catchers into two or three numbers, so foreign fans rarely learn these names. Watch a whole season and you notice who steadies the staff.
