My Take
Tracy Chapman is one of the very few artists I would call genuinely incorruptible. She went from busking while studying at Tufts to a six-times-platinum debut and a Grammy for Best New Artist, and somehow none of it bent her. What strikes me most is the economy of her art: one guitar, one low unmistakable voice, and songs about poverty and longing that say more in four minutes than most albums manage. She has never chased trends or the spotlight, yet her work keeps resurfacing across generations. To me she is the standard for what a songwriter's integrity actually looks like.
