My Take

Phil Dunphy could have been a cartoon, but Ty Burrell gave him a beating heart that made Modern Family sing for eleven seasons. His genius is the goofy dad earnestness, those magic tricks and dad jokes that should be cringeworthy yet land as oddly touching because he plays the optimism completely straight. Two Emmys felt earned rather than gifted. What people forget is how versatile he is, slipping into voice work and grittier dramatic roles with the same ease. He is one of those reliable character actors who quietly elevates everything he touches, and I would happily watch him read a phone book.
