My Take
Tyler Perry is the clearest proof I know that critics and audiences keep separate ledgers. The same man collected a Golden Raspberry and, years later, the Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award — and to me both honors are accurate. His films can be broad and uneven, but his business instincts are historic: a playwright from New Orleans who built his own studio empire and an ownership model Hollywood never offered people like him. I find his refusal to chase prestige genuinely admirable. He writes for the audience that raised him, employs at scale, and banks the cultural power. That trade-off deserves far more respect than it usually gets.
