Udo Suzuki

Udo Suzuki has been on Japanese television for so long that it is easy to stop noticing how unusual he is. Born in Tsuruoka, Yamagata, in 1970 — real name Hideki Suzuki — he is half of the comedy duo Kyaeen alongside Hiroyuki Amano, and has also played in the band UltraCats, a musical background that most casual viewers never register. What I find genuinely rare is not his material but his posture. Most comedians, once they reach a certain level of fame, start protecting themselves: fewer risks, tighter control over how they are seen. He never closed up. He is still the one being teased, still visibly moved on camera, still reacting without a layer of irony between himself and the audience. Sustaining that for decades is far harder than it looks, because openness is exhausting in a way that a polished persona is not. He also kept his Yamagata accent rather than sanding it down for Tokyo, which tells you most of what you need to know about him.
