Mikio Narita

I'll be honest, Mikio Narita is one of those faces I clock instantly even when I can't name the movie, because nobody did cold menace quite like him. That thin, knowing smile and those flat, amused eyes could make a whole scene go tense without him raising his voice once, which is a rarer gift than people give villains credit for. He never seemed to be sweating for the audience's approval; he just let this dry, almost detached intelligence ooze out, so even his nastiest characters felt like they were three steps ahead of everyone. There's a stillness to him, a quiet that lands harder than shouting. Losing him at 55 feels far too early, but that sly, dangerous grin still flickers up in my head unprompted. A truly unforgettable heavy.
