Vijay Antony

Vijay Antony is exactly the kind of relentless polymath I admire. He broke into Tamil cinema as a composer in 2005, then quietly annexed singing, acting, directing, editing, lyric-writing and sound engineering until he was effectively a one-man film unit. In an industry where the soundtrack is the soul, having mastered that engine room before stepping into the spotlight gives his on-screen presence an unusual gravity. There's a particular steadiness that comes from artists who understand every department they walk into. That a man from Nagercoil now scores and stars across South Indian film, owning both the music and the frame, strikes me as genuinely impressive.
