My Take

Vin Baker interests me less for the four straight All-Star selections, impressive as they are, than for the second act. A 211 cm big man out of the University of Hartford, he reached the top of the NBA, weathered a turbulent road, and came back as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks. I find that arc genuinely moving. A player who has stood on the summit and then chooses to kneel down beside young players to teach reveals more character than any stat line. There is, I suspect, a gentleness in him that does not match the frame, and that contrast is what makes him compelling to me.
