Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson is the rare filmmaker whose work I could identify from a single frame, and I mean that as the highest compliment. Plenty of directors have a style; Anderson has a complete handmade universe — symmetrical, pastel, melancholy underneath the whimsy. What interests me most is how his dollhouse aesthetics never hide the grief at the center of his stories; The Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom are sad films wearing beautiful costumes. His 2024 Academy Award for a short film felt like overdue recognition for a career of stubborn consistency. In an industry that rewards imitation, he has spent decades refusing to imitate anyone, including, somehow, his many imitators.
