My Take
William Regal, born Darren Matthews in Codsall in 1968, is one of wrestling's great craftsmen to me. The sneering British-aristocrat gimmick paired with genuinely refined technical work made him a villain audiences couldn't help respecting. What I find most interesting is that his second act eclipsed his first: as a developer of talent, helping young wrestlers come through, he's arguably valued even more than as an in-ring performer. Some people are built to shine in the spotlight, others to grow the people around them, and he turned out to be the latter. He reads as a man made entirely of love for the business.
