Satoru Sayama

I'll be honest, the first time I really watched footage of the original Tiger Mask, my brain short-circuited a little. This guy from Shimonoseki was doing things in a wrestling ring in the early '80s that nobody else was even attempting yet, flying around with a speed and grace that felt almost cartoonish in the best way, and it's no wonder a whole generation of kids lost their minds over him. But what gets me is that Satoru Sayama wasn't content to just be a dazzling acrobat. He went and founded Shooto, basically helping plant the seeds of modern mixed martial arts before most people had the vocabulary for it. That combo of pure showman and obsessive martial-arts seeker living in one person is rare, and the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame nod feels well earned to me.
