Yōsuke Kubozuka

I have a real soft spot for Yōsuke Kubozuka, because he's one of those actors who never once felt like he was reading off a script of how to have a career. That raw, electric performance in GO is what hooked me; he won the Japan Academy best actor for it, and honestly, watching it back, you just nod and go, yeah, of course he did. What came after was rocky: in 2003 he was referred to prosecutors over an assault on a man, and in 2004 he survived a fall from his ninth-floor apartment. Instead of cashing in on the hype, he kind of drifted off into his own orbit, doing his own spiritual, free-spirited thing on his own terms. Then he turns up in Scorsese's Silence like it's no big deal. Whether it's a Japanese indie or a Hollywood epic, he's unmistakably himself. You can't box this guy in, and that's exactly why I find him so magnetic.
