My Take
Yua Shinkawa began as a gravure and fashion model and ended up an actress, which sounds like a small step and is actually one of the hardest crossings in Japanese entertainment. Swimsuit work opens doors and then follows you around for years, and audiences are quick to decide that a model cannot really act. Born in Saitama in 1993 and standing 166 cm, she made that crossing without a loud reinvention campaign and without a scandal to reset her image. She simply kept showing up and getting better until the old label stopped mattering. I have a lot of time for performers who win by persistence rather than noise.
