Yukiko Iwai

Yukiko Iwai, known to everyone at the time simply as Yuyu, was a member of Onyanko Club, and it is worth pausing on how short that window actually was: 21 June 1985 to 31 August 1987. Barely two years. Yet for a whole generation of Japanese viewers, her name still triggers an entire era of television. That tells you less about her and more about how ferociously concentrated Japanese pop culture was in the mid-eighties, when a nightly variety show could turn ordinary teenagers into permanent national memory. She was the shortest member at 150 cm, which sounds like trivia until you consider how visual identity worked in a group that large; being instantly distinguishable was survival. Born in Yokohama in 1968, she continued afterwards as a singer and actress until 1997, which matters, because most people swept up in a phenomenon like that do not get a career on the other side of it. She did.
