My Take
Zack de la Rocha is, to me, the rare frontman whose silence carries as much weight as his scream. With Rage Against the Machine he fused hip-hop cadence and punk fury into something that still sounds dangerous decades later, and unlike most protest artists he actually lives the politics he shouts about, showing up for human rights causes far from any stage. His reluctance to release solo material frustrates fans, but I read it as integrity: he speaks only when he has something to say. Few artists have ever made anger feel this articulate, disciplined, and morally serious.
Overview
Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha (born January 12, 1970) is an American musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, and political activist. He is best known as the vocalist and lyricist of the rock band Rage Against the Machine. Through both Rage Against the Machine and his activism, de la Rocha promotes left-wing politics in opposition to corporate America, the military–industrial complex, and government oppression.
