My Take

Abbie Cornish has always struck me as an actress who chose craft over celebrity, and I respect that choice enormously. Her Fanny Brawne in Bright Star remains one of my favorite performances of the 2000s — restrained, luminous, devastating in its final stretch. What intrigues me is the range: she can anchor an intimate art-house drama, hold her own in studio fare like Limitless and RoboCop, and then go record hip-hop on the side. Coming from rural New South Wales to that kind of versatility suggests a quietly ferocious work ethic. She is the sort of performer whose name in the credits makes me trust a film a little more.
