My Take

Adoor Gopalakrishnan is, for me, a genuine master. He brought the new wave to Malayalam cinema, and his 1972 debut Swayamvaram announced a director who treated film as carved sculpture rather than disposable product. Twelve features across more than five decades is extraordinary restraint in an industry obsessed with output. That France awarded him the Legion of Honour tells you his reach extends well beyond Kerala. I deeply admire artists who pour everything into a single work instead of scattering their energy thin. Gopalakrishnan reminds me why cinema can be culture, not just commerce, and his patience is its own statement.

Mouttathu Gopalakrishnan Unnithan (born 3 July 1941), known professionally as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who works in Malayalam cinema. With the release of his first feature film Swayamvaram (1972), Gopalakrishnan pioneered the "new wave" in Malayalam cinema during the 1970s.
