Akihiro Kakuta

I'll be honest, I knew Akihiro Kakuta as one of the guys in the comedy trio Tokyo03 long before I clocked that he's a legit singer-songwriter too, and that combo just makes me grin. He's got this ordinary, slightly put-upon Tokyo-everyman face, the kind of dude you'd pass on the street without a second glance, and somehow that very plainness is his secret weapon. When he locks into that deadpan, over-explaining everything with a straight face and then suddenly flips into a little burst of character work, it's the funniest thing. The voice carries, the timing's surgical, and you can tell he takes both the laughs and the music dead seriously. A versatile guy who never wears it smugly, he's just got that warm, lived-in flavor I find easy to root for.
