My Take
American McGee earns my respect for refusing to play it safe. The Dallas-born designer took Wonderland, of all things, and reforged it into a gorgeous nightmare of blood, madness, and beauty in American McGee's Alice, then doubled down with Madness Returns. After honing his craft inside id Software, he stepped out under his own name and let his darker imagination run free. I have a soft spot for creators who chase a personal, slightly poisonous aesthetic instead of courting the broadest possible crowd, and McGee is one of the purest examples of that instinct in the medium.
