My Take
What gets me about Akihiro Kitamura is the sheer range — actor, voice actor, film director, all rolled into one guy from Kochi of all places. Growing up in that rugged, go-your-own-way corner of Japan and then shipping off to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts is not a normal career arc, and I mean that as a compliment. That transatlantic leap tells you something about how seriously he takes craft — you don't cross an ocean to study the arts if you're just dabbling. The actor-director combo is particularly interesting to me because those two roles demand almost opposite mental postures — total surrender to a character versus complete control of a vision — and people who can hold both at once tend to see the world a little sideways. I'd love to dig deeper into what he's actually made.
