My Take
Alannah Myles will forever be tethered to "Black Velvet," and I think that is both a blessing and a quiet injustice. That smoky, lived-in voice is one of the most distinctive instruments to come out of Canada, and winning a Grammy and multiple Junos with it proves she was no fluke. What fascinates me is how a single song can eclipse an entire artist; people remember the hook but forget the songwriter behind it. I respect her precisely because that voice never needed gimmicks. To me she is a craftswoman whose tone alone earns a permanent place in any serious conversation about late-80s rock vocals.
