My Take

Aleksei Kozlov is the kind of player who never made highlight reels, and that's exactly why he interests me. A right-back out of Petrozavodsk, a cold city far from Russia's footballing limelight, he built a professional career on the least glamorous job on the pitch: shutting down the opposition's most dangerous flank, ninety minutes of relentless up-and-down running. At 186 cm he had the frame, but it was the unglamorous discipline that kept him in the game. To me, full-backs like Kozlov are the unsung architects of any defense, and I have a soft spot for athletes whose value lives in the work no statistic ever captures.
