My Take

Alex Winter is one of my favorite second acts in Hollywood. Most people freeze him in 1989 as Bill S. Preston, Esq., the lovable goofball of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but the more interesting Winter is the one behind the camera, the director and screenwriter who made the gleefully bizarre Freaked and kept building a serious filmmaking career while others chased fading stardom. Returning for Face the Music in 2020 felt like a gift to fans rather than a cash grab, because he had nothing left to prove. London-born, stage-trained, endlessly curious, Winter shows how an actor can outgrow an iconic role without ever disowning it. That balance is rare, and I admire it.
