My Take

Jeremih is, for my money, a late-night artist in the best sense. From Chicago and educated at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he turned a 2008 meeting with producer Mick Schultz into a Def Jam deal and a signature lane in modern R&B. That airy falsetto and his command of slow-burn bedroom atmospherics are the real deal, and the fact that he writes and produces too marks him as more than just a voice. I am drawn to artists who let the music do the talking rather than the gossip columns, and Jeremih has always seemed content to live in the song itself.
